How contamination can enter the public water supply
When you open a tap, water from the public water supply comes out. It is hard to believe that anything could travel back down the pipes and enter the water mains out in the street. However, in certain circumstances this can occur and when it does, it is known as backflow. A similar situation can occur in the pipework within the premises, even if it is supplied from a storage cistern.
