Young cricket on company wicket

09/06/2005

Dozens of children from home and away took centre field during a county championship cricket match today (Friday 10 June).

Sixteen youngsters from Northumbrian Water’s supply area, from Berwick down to North Yorkshire and across to the Pennines, and sixteen youngsters from Essex & Suffolk Water’s supply area competed against each other at Durham County Cricket Club, Chester-le-Street.

Northumbrian Water supplies 2.6 million customers in the north east with water and waste water services and 1.7 million customers in the south east, trading as Essex & Suffolk Water, with water services.

The children’s colourful quick cricket match took place during today’s lunch period of the second day of the Durham versus Essex county match.

Each participant received a certificate as a momento of this unique inter-county challenge with the exciting opportunity for them to see their cricketing heroes in action.

Both Northumbrian Water and Essex & Suffolk Water are involved in programmes with Durham County Cricket Club and Essex Cricket Club, respectively, to encourage youngsters to be involved with sport at a grass roots level and have a healthy life-style from an early age.

Jacqueline Searle, Essex & Suffolk Water’s Communications Adviser, said:  “As a company this is an excellent example of how we are immersed in community life and as our company operates in both the Durham and Essex counties this is an ideal opportunity to bring these children together for a very special day.”
