Landfill directive

Background

The aim is to protect the environment and have consistency in practice and standards throughout Europe. The directive was agreed by the European Union's Council of Ministers in July 1999. The regulations to implement the EC Landfill Directive came into force in Britain in June 2002.

Objective

Article 1
"....to provide for measures, procedures and guidance to prevent or reduce as far as possible negative effects on the environment, in particular the pollution of surface water, groundwater, soil and air, and on the global environment, including the greenhouse effect, as well as any resulting risk to human health, from landfilling of waste during the whole life cycle of the landfill."

 Corrosive, flamable and infectious waste banned from landfill sites.

 Sept 02  Businesses to identify their waste using new categories.
 July 03  Whole tyres banned from landfill sites.
 July 04  The co-disposal of hazrdous and non-hazardous waste in the same landfill site ends.
 July 06

 Shredded tyres banned from landfill sites.

 Non-harzardous liquid waste banned from non-hazardous landfill sites.

 July 07

 Non-harzardous liquid waste banned from non-hazardous landfill sites.

 Non-harzardous waste to be pre-treated before going to landfill sites.
