Risk assessments

An Introduction to the use of Risk Assessment as a practical approach to complying with the requirements of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999

These Regulations came into force on 1st July 1999, and it is a requirement of these Regulations that Water Undertakers (Water Companies) enforce them.

The Regulations apply to all fittings that receive, or may receive, water supplied by a Water Undertaker and many requirements are specified.

The Regulations are intended to prevent waste, misuse, undue consumption, erroneous measurement (theft of water) and contamination of water supplied by a Water Undertaker.

The Regulations state that all fittings and installations must comply with:

  • An appropriate British Standard, a European Technical Approval or some other national specification of an EEA State which is no less effective, or
  • A specification approved by the Regulator, or
  • A method of Installation approved by the Water Undertaker, and
  • Installations must also comply with an approved code of practice.

This now becomes a vast and complex topic, and it is intended that 'Fittings and Materials Risk Assessment' documents will assist in providing practical interpretation and solutions to many commonly encountered situations.

There are also Support Documents and a Glossary to aid Risk Assessments.

It is important to note that Risk Assessment cannot contradict a Regulation and can only be used to clarify and produce a practical solution.

The Water Undertakers Risk Assessment is final in its area of control and can only be superseded by a more effective control.

Risk Assessments are regularly up dated, as new information becomes apparent, so always use the latest issue number.

Risk Assessments are public documents available to all, and new documents will be produced from time to time.
