Like the Building Regulations, the idea is to ensure that plumbing installations are completed in a workmanlike manner. Whilst broad ranging, these Regulations cover several core themes such as plumbing designs and water systems, backflow protection, water fittings and good plumbing practices. Their purpose is primarily to prevent contamination of drinking water, and matters such as the waste, misuse, undue consumption or erroneous measurement of water. The overall aim is to ensure that water stays wholesome at all times.
The Water Regulations are there to protect us all. They govern good plumbing practice and encourage a workmanlike manner. Whilst it may be hard to appreciate, a simple mistake or omission of a water fitting could potentially cause contamination, harm and cost to many people who use drinking water in their daily lives, which includes all of us!
Our first intention is always to work closely with installers and to provide a fair, consistent and transparent approach to the enforcement of the Water Regulations. We recognise though that where this breaks down or where there are persistent breaches or risks, further action is required. This may result in a fine and we also have powers to carry out remedial works to ensure compliance.
