Water customers are being advised to check that the caller at their door is genuine to prevent conmen from striking.
Following a rise in the number of bogus callers claiming to be from the ‘water board’, Essex & Suffolk Water is advising its customers to think carefully before letting anyone into their home.
Bogus callers are people who claim to be employed by companies like Essex & Suffolk Water but who are only interested in stealing from property.
The company has the following advice for customers:
• Make sure your front and back doors are locked at all times.
• Look for logos on vehicles and clothing.
• Examine the caller’s identity card closely.
• Use your door chain while checking the caller’s identity or speak to them through a locked door. Accept their identity card through your letterbox.
Customers can register for a password to protect themselves from bogus callers. Anyone from Essex & Suffolk Water needing to gain access to your property will know this word and use it on request. To register a password call 0845 782 0999.
Claire Bishop from Essex & Suffolk Water said: “It is so important that customers take note of this advice – younger members of the family should pass the advice onto their parents and grandparents to ensure they protect themselves and their property.
“A genuine caller will not mind waiting so if the caller says they are from the water company, ring Essex & Suffolk Water to confirm their identity on 0845 782 0999.”
