Leaks fixed at horse sanctuary

Leaking pipes at a horse protection society have been replaced by water workers as part of a community initiative.

Employees from Essex & Suffolk Water replaced and laid pipe at the Essex Horse and Pony Protection Society, Pitsea under the company’s community initiative, the Just an Hour Scheme.

This initiative enables employees to devote at least 12 hours of work time to an approved community cause and is designed to improve local communities and the environment.

Employees from Essex & Suffolk Water first noticed there was a problem with leaking water at the society when a six monthly meter reading revealed a dramatic rise.

A visit by a technician revealed that they needed to replace the supply pipe because it was leaking in several places.

Distribution managers from Essex & Suffolk Water then replaced 400 metres of underground supply pipe and also laid 50 metres of new pipe to supply water to a new veterinary block being constructed on the site.

The work at the society was supported by Essex & Suffolk Water contractors Anglia Land Drainage who donated a trenching machine to assist the excavation and Kemac Services who have donated a standpipe for use in the veterinary block.

Neal Warren, distribution operations manager said: “We do our very best to find and fix leaks and we were delighted to be able to help the society to replace the pipe that was leaking.

“Working on this project created a real sense of team spirit and we all found this project to be very worthwhile. It has given us a real sense of achievement”
