Thousands of customers in Thurrock have become more water wise thanks to an efficiency initiative.
Just over 8,700 customers took part in the Essex & Suffolk Water project which started in August 2005.
Each household taking part was provided with a pack containing water-saving devices including a Save-a-flush which saves one litre of water every time the toilet is flushed, a shower timer and shower flow bag. It also contained a dripping tap gauge, a hosegun for watering the garden and water storage crystals to help reduce the need to water hanging baskets and tubs.
By using the pack to complete the water efficiency survey of their home, the customers taking part in the project saved an estimated 316,500 litres per day, equivalent to over 4,500 baths every day.
Customers also completed a home water survey designed to gather water usage information and aid Essex & Suffolk Water's demand forecasting.
Thomas Andrewartha, water demand planner for Essex & Suffolk Water said: “We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part. This initiative has proved to be a very worthwhile and is an essential part of raising awareness of how to use water wisely. The project has shown customers how easy it is to make their homes more water efficient.
“Demand for water is rising across the county due to growth of housing and higher use of domestic appliances. It is important that we focus on promoting water efficiency all year round, not just in the hot summer months.”
East Anglia is one of the driest regions in the country and Essex & Suffolk Water is constantly working to ensure that there are plentiful supplies for the future. As part of this it is essential that customers use water wisely.
