Water-wise gardeners

01/11/2006

A truck-load of water butts have been donated to a Lowestoft allotment to encourage plot holders to become more water-efficient..

Essex & Suffolk Water has given 23 water butts to the Normanston allotments, near Princes Walk to encourage water-wise gardening at the site.

The allotments site has undergone a lot of improvement  work during the last year, with regular working parties organised by 'The Park Allotments', a voluntary group consisting of plot holders.

Claire Bishop from Essex & Suffolk Water said: “Rainwater is better for plants than tap water and is easy to collect in a water butt.

“We are pleased to be able to help the plot holders to be water-efficient gardeners through the use of these donated water butts.”

The water butts will be placed at key locations around the allotments to allow rainwater to be collected and recycled.

Mandy Thaxter, allotments officer at Waveney District Council said:  "I am delighted that Essex & Suffolk Water agreed to donate these water butts to Normanston allotments.

“Collecting rainwater is an important part of allotment gardening, particularly in light of the longer, drier summers we are having".
