Just an hour - Suffolk

 

November 2006

2 volunteers visited Denes High School in Lowestoft to take part in their Science Fair for a day.  The volunteers gave practical experiments to show how we clean water and talked about water efficiency and the environment to A level students.  15hours volunteered.

November 2006

A party of 12 volunteers worked with the Trinity Broads Authority at Rollesby broadshore, on an environmental project coppicing alder and building a bonfire to clear the woodland floor to allow sunlight in benefiting the flora and fauna.  
90hours donated.

October 2006  

4 volunteers worked with Young Enterprise at Beccles Middle School to roll out the ‘Our Nation’ one day programme with year 5 students who learnt about our multi-cultural society, looking at different cultures and religions.  30hours donated.

October 2006

8 volunteers planted wildlife plug plants behind the bat roost at Ormesby to provide a rich nectar source to attract insects and consequently bats.  They planted 2000 plants in 2 hours across 200 square metres whilst enduring galeforce winds, rain and hailstones!  52hours donated.

September 2006

4 volunteers worked for a day with Suffolk Wildlife Trust, clearing mown long grass from meadows at Oulton Broad and building bonfires.  30hours donated.  

August 2006

31 volunteers spend a day clearing ragwort from fields in Lound.  Ragwort is an invasive weed which is particularly poisonous to horses which graze in neighbouring fields.  182hours donated.

June 2006 – 8 staff spent a day with Suffolk Wildlife Trust at a wood nr Southwold carrying out tasks such as haymaking and tree felling.  42hours donated.

January 2006  5 volunteers partnered Young Enterprise at Beccles Middle School to roll out the ‘Our World’ programme giving children an insight into world trade and transportation of foods, goods, around the globe.  25hours donated.

All year – Number partners is a scheme where volunteers go into schools on a weekly basis for an hour to help primary school children with the number skills.   Volunteers go in on a regular basis over the year to Woodlock Primary School in Lowestoft.   Pupil mentoring also takes place all year at Kirkley High School in Lowestoft for students who are of the ‘silent majority’ – those children who get on quietly with their work and not always noticed.   Circa 50hours donated.
