Gardening enthusiasts are being asked to think about the water that they use before they spring into action this Easter weekend.
Easter is the traditional time that people start their spring and summer planting and although there are no restrictions for water use in the Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW) supply area it is still important for customers to think about the water that they use.
ESW’s two major reservoirs – Hanningfield near Chelmsford and Abberton near Colchester - are currently full. About half of the Essex & Suffolk Water supply in the Suffolk area comes from underground sources - levels are currently in good shape and are being constantly monitored.
John Devall, operations director said: “Although we will again not have restrictions this year, we are asking customers to use water wisely.
“Our customers are generally very responsible and have reduced the amount of water they use over the last 10 years. We are keen to keep working in partnership with our customers to encourage wise use of water to reduce waste and protect supplies.”
Gardeners can follow a range of water-wise tips in the garden:
• Water plants in the evening to retain moisture in the soil .
• Install a water butt to recycle rainwater.
• Create a ‘reservoir’ or depression in the ground around the plant to prevent the water running away.
• Don’t over water a lawn as this encourages roots to grow close to the soil surface which will then be more susceptible to drought and dry periods.
Mr Devall added: “We always receive very positive responses from our customers and we would encourage them to continue to work with us to ensure that we all conserve this precious resource.”
