A Suffolk water tower is supplying customers again after being topped off with a £780,000 new roof.
Lodgewood water tower, near Walpole, is now supplying water to the 16,500 residents in the Blyth area of Suffolk.
The roof was fitted to the 55-year-old tower by a 500-tonne crane during a two-hour long operation earlier this year.
The existing roof had to be removed in segments before the new 20-tonne roof could be fitted. It needed to be replaced because the condition had deteriorated.
The work means that the tower can supply residents with water for at least another 25 years.
Lodgewood tower is a 30-metre high reinforced tower with an elevated steel tank which holds 1.4 million litres (300,000 gallons) of water. It is fed with water from Walpole Water Treatment Works.
David Aland, production manager at Essex & Suffolk Water said: “We are committed to continually investing in our resources to ensure that we provide quality drinking water.
“The new roof will ensure that our customers in this area of Suffolk, and future generations, continue to receive top quality water which is amongst some of the best tap water in the country.”
