Bounty hunting anglers failed in their quest to catch a Golden Trout but still landed a fantastic catch for charity.
They raised £1,500 for WaterAid during a fishing competition at Hanningfield reservoir. WaterAid is Essex & Suffolk Water’s adopted charity which is dedicated to saving lives by providing clean domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education in parts of Africa and Asia.
Ten Golden Trout were released in the reservoir during the competition as part of celebrations to mark the 50th birthday of Hanningfield reservoir.
International tackle company Hardy & Greys donated more than £500 in prizes for the winners of the competition. If anglers caught one of the Golden Trout they would get a £100 bonus.
Although none of the participants caught a Golden Trout they did catch 192 fish in total – the biggest fish was caught by Paul Gregg from Chelmsford weighing 6lb and 9oz.
The pairs competition was won by Alan Stern from Chelmsford and Nigel Angus from Wickford who caught 16 fish weighing 32lb and 12oz.
Second place went to Peter Yeoman from Newport and Richard Savage from Chelmsford who caught 12 fish weighing 31lb and 2oz.
Third place was awarded to Mark Rooney from Southend and Lloyd Pallett from Harlow who caught 16 fish weighing 30lb and 13oz.
Fishermen at Hanningfield can still search for Golden Trout at the reservoir – they will be rewarded with a free day’s boat hire if they catch one of the fish this season.
