World champion backs WaterWalk and Run

23/05/2008

World champion runner Kriss Akabusi reckons a charity walk and run is right on track.

Kriss put his weight behind the Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW) event in aid of Cancer Research when he met the organising team.

“It's an excellent cause, and great to see the company getting behind it and encouraging the local community to take part,” he said.

The former world champion was presenting certificates at a skills awards evening to celebrate the achievements of a number of the company’s Lowestoft-based employees.

WaterWalk & WaterRun takes place along the Lowestoft seafront on Sunday 8 June. It is expected that hundreds of people will complete either a three mile walk or a five mile run raising thousands of pounds in sponsorship.

The event started last year when more than 100 people of all ages, aged from two to 80, completed the course from Royal Green along Lowestoft and Pakefield seafront raising £2,639 for Cancer Reasearch UK.

One of the organisers Dee Chapman, customer manager for ESW based at St Mary’s contact centre in Lowestoft, said: “Every one of us will be touched in some way by cancer during their life.

“WaterWalk and Run gives people the chance to celebrate survivors and remember those who have been lost to the disease while raising money to help find ways to prevent and cure cancer.

“We expect it to be even better than last year. It is a fun family afternoon out and last year people came in fancy dress, walked their dogs and pushed young children in buggies alongside the more serious runners,” said Dee.

Individuals, families and corporate teams are encouraged to take part and it isn’t too late to get involved. Registrations will be taken on the day from 1pm at the Royal Green, Lowestoft.  It costs £5 for individuals or £20 for teams of five.  Children under the age of 14 are free but must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18.
