Supporting the flight for life

26/08/2008

Safety conscious water workers have come to the aid of a local life-saving charity.

Essex & Suffolk Water has handed over a cheque for £7,127 to the Essex Air Ambulance.

This donation is the latest award from the water company’s Care for Safety Challenge Fund, which has raised more than £34,500 for charities in Essex & Suffolk Water’s supply area since April 2006.

This vital donation has helped Essex Air Ambulance to recruit its first full-time doctor to fly with the paramedic crew to emergencies in the county.

The Care for Safety challenge uses raising money for charity as an incentive for employees to think more about health and safety at work. Donations are made when workers report and address health and safety issues and concerns, report accidents and near misses and complete accident and incident reports.

The cheque was presented by members of Essex & Suffolk Water’s health and safety committee to Essex Air Ambulance staff at the air ambulance base at Boreham, near Chelmsford.

Mark Weale, chair of Essex & Suffolk Water’s health and safety committee, said: “The chance to raise money for local charities through the Care for Safety Challenge Fund really sharpens employees’ focus on potential health and safety hazards.”

Wendy Byland, events manager for the Essex Air Ambulance, said: “We’re thrilled to receive this donation from Essex & Suffolk Water employees and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them in the future.

“The Essex Air Ambulance service receives no government or lottery funding and is totally reliant on donations from the people of Essex to keep this vital service flying every day.”

This latest donation brings the total amount Essex & Suffolk Water workers have raised for the Essex Air Ambulance service to more than £8,100, with the rest raised through additional fundraising activities.

The Essex Air Ambulance service was established as a charity in 1997 to provide a life-saving service for the people of Essex. The air ambulance is in operation seven days a week and has flown more than 9,000 missions at a cost of more than £2,000 per emergency flight.
