Angling for achievement

Wickford students enjoyed a day at Hanningfield Reservoir learning practical skills for a BTEC course in fish husbandry.

Beauchamps High School in Wickford has embarked on a first for local secondary schools by delivering this BTEC course for students interested in pursuing a career in fish related industries.

The school asked Essex & Suffolk Water’s team at Hanningfield Reservoir to provide the youngsters with all of the fly-fishing training required using one of the company’s qualified Sport England coaches, Hugh Nolan.

Eight students and two teachers spent the day at Essex & Suffolk Water’s Hanningfield Reservoir, near Chelmsford. The year ten students learnt about the various types of rods, reels and flies before being given some casting technique tuition. To round off their day, each pupil was taken out in a boat by one of the local club's experienced anglers to put into practice what they had learnt earlier.

Beauchamps High School Assistant Headteacher Mat Harper said: “The day we spent at Hanningfield Reservoir was truly fantastic. We were overwhelmed by the support we received from Essex & Suffolk Water and the volunteers at Hanningfield Reservoir. The students were so impressed they have each written to thank the team at Hanningfield and the volunteers for the help they have provided.”

Perry Woolner, Essex & Suffolk Water’s Commercial Manager said: “We were delighted to be able to provide students interested in a career in this area with practical experience at Hanningfield Reservoir .It was wonderful to see the students benefiting from the amenity and the experience of the team at Hanningfield and the volunteers”
