We are proud to provide a sustainable, affordable, clean and safe water supply and to manage and treat the waste water returned to us in a way that protects the environment.
Essex & Suffolk Water operates in the driest region in the country. Climate change, a growing number of new homes and an increase in the use of water-consuming devices will mean the demand for water will continue to increase in the years to come.
The average person in our region uses a staggering 160 litres of water a day – more than the UK average of an already-high 150 litres. It can be hard to visualise just how much water this is, if you live in a household of two adults and two children, this is the equivalent of 1,126 pints of milk per day.
Water efficiency is about using water wisely to avoid waste. By avoiding waste you are not only helping to conserve a precious resource, but you
are helping to protect the environment.
Producing and treating high quality water requires a lot of energy to treat and deliver it to your homes and businesses. This results in carbon emissions. Even if you do not use the water, (for instance, if a tap is left running) the water will still need to be cleaned again before it can be returned to the environment. Each time this happens, more energy is needed to treat and clean the water, twice.
When you use hot water, you are also using gas, electricity or oil to heat it, which also results in carbon emissions. Water is essential for life, but wasted water is a drain on the environment. Reduce your waste to reduce your carbon footprint. By saving water you can also save money. You don’t have to be on a water meter to see the difference – households without a meter will notice a difference in their utility bills.
At Essex & Suffolk Water we are passionate about the environment. We hope that by providing you with the facts regarding water efficiency that you will be just as passionate looking after this precious resource as
we are.
