You′re hired! Apprentice roles on offer


The search is on for water industry talent of the future.

Essex & Suffolk Water has launched a brand new apprenticeship scheme, which offers the chance to develop a future career with a respected local company.

During a three-year intensive training programme, apprentices will become skilled in two of the company’s key operational areas, water production and distribution.

Trainees will learn skills associated with the operation of a water treatment works and installing and maintaining Essex & Suffolk Water’s 8,600km network of pipes, to deliver excellent quality drinking water to customers.

The water company will also offer apprentices the opportunity to study for nationally recognised, Level 2 vocational qualifications in water engineering and network construction operations. Extensive support from mentors and colleagues will be provided.

There is also a chance for apprentices to undertake other ‘on the job’ training, such as a HGV licence and PAT testing accreditation.

Two places are initially available on the scheme, which starts in October 2010 and is based at the water company’s treatment works in Chigwell, Essex.

Apprentices will earn a starting salary of £8,861, increasing to £15,752 by the end of the training period.

The general operative apprenticeship was developed following the success of maintenance and electrical apprenticeships already underway within the water company. Essex & Suffolk Water has six apprentices currently developing skills in maintenance and electrical crafts, four in Essex and two in the Suffolk region.

Essex production operations treatment manager, Gary Banks, has worked for the company for more than twenty years and started his career with Essex & Suffolk Water in a role similar to the apprenticeship being offered.

Gary said: “This really is an excellent opportunity to build a great career with a well respected company.

“During my time with Essex & Suffolk Water I have been given opportunities to develop not only within the company but as an individual, gaining skills both at work and at an academic level. This has helped me to progress from a general operative to a senior management position.”

No specific qualifications are required for the roles on offer, but applicants must have a driving licence, show willingness to learn and be prepared to work outdoors.
